Cresswell Arms Pub of Year 2015

Award winning pub is a step back in time.

Two landlord brothers have won the coveted Pembrokeshire Campaign for Real Ale ‘Pub of the Year’ award. Colin and John Evans said “The Cresselly Arms has always been a wonderful locals’ pub, but since taking over 19 months ago we have strived to increase the range of good beers. On most days we can offer a choice of five, including ‘Quay Ale’, which is produced locally especially for us.” At the same time, the Evans brothers are keen to promote Welsh beers in general, and great ales from Pembrokeshire’s microbreweries in particular.

Situated on the Cresswell River between Canaston Bridge and Carew, this 250-year-old, ivy-covered hostelry seems like a throw-back to the Victorian age, or beyond. The homely farm kitchen interior with beer straight from the barrel is a haven for locals and visitors alike. Especially in winter, the real fire makes this cosy old pub even more welcoming.

Members of CAMRA gathered on a sunny afternoon to present the award and sample the beers on offer. Andrew Humphries, the Pembrokeshire branch chairman, congratulated Colin and John and said “The number of Pembrokeshire pubs serving quality beers and ciders is increasing annually. Next year’s award should be quite a battle. You will have to work very hard to keep it.”

The Cresselly Arms, known locally as ‘The Quay’, is in a beautiful location overlooking the Cresswell River. Depending on the tide, boats can moor opposite for crew refreshment. On 1st August there will be a River Carnival when colourful craft cruise up to the quay from Lawrenny yacht club. Other events to keep an eye out for include Friday barbecues in the summer and also a planned beer festival

Pembrokeshire branch of CAMRA are always looking for new members to help with the “arduous” task of visiting pubs and tasting beers.
